Painting Challenge - Cultists

Next up on my painting challenges is a Troops choice (Aaron rolled a 3 on the table).

I thought I might try to take some in progress shots this time round.

Whilst I do have 5 Iron Warrior tactical marines almost finished I wanted to work on a unit I would need for the upcoming escalation league we are going to run.

With that in mind I have decided to paint up a unit of 8 kdk cultists.

Here is the first shot of them with a very minor conversion.

The cultists need to be armed with auto pistols. After much searching I settled on these

Not actually to sure how to approach the painting of these guys as most of the kdk stuff I have painted so far has been red heavy...

Daemonkin Chaos Lord

Continuing my painting challenge with Aaron here is my next completed model...a Daemonkin Chaos Lord.

Notes to self

1 - Buy a drill
2 - Water paint down even more than you think you need
3 - Find a decent red wash rather than redbrown
4 - Go back and edge highlight the bolt pistol

Emperors Children test model #3

Well I feel that I'm improving, much happier with this one. Still room for improvement however so I will keep at it!

Edit - Went over the bling a bit to bring it back up after the washes. Very happy.

Painting Challenge Three Complete

For painting challenge three I opted to finish of some in progress Dark Eldar venoms I had started.

TBH they don't look so good in the photo. I layered the red paint in order to get a transition of the colour across the model. Up close they look pretty good.

The one thing I will revisit is the canopy of the centre model as I did not get the green to blend as I wanted it.

For my "April" challenge (when I am back at work my painting will slow down so I am building a buffer) Aaron rolled me a 10 - Free choice. With this I have opted to finish off a unit of 5 flesh hounds that I had completed the air brush stage on....which is pretty much 80% of the painting on these models.

Emperors Children test model #2

OK so on this one I've used a slightly brighter gold and done the eyes red. I also haven't weathered or washed the armour.

Next one I may have a go at an oil wash.

Emperors Children test model

Got keen today and decided to paint up a test model for my Emperors Children. I stupidly decided to mess it up and weather it a bit but it still looks ok.

Will try another one tomorrow with some different paints and try for a cleaner look.

Hobby Challenge One and Two Complete

January Challenge was the Iron Breaker Siege Master (HQ choice rolled). He came out ok ish but there is much room to improve.

February challenge is a  Maulerfiend (Heavy Support rolled). Pretty happy with this guy. First real vehicle I have used the airbrush on.  Next time I will try a slightly different technique as suggested by Paul.

March / Challenge 3 (target is simply 12 challenges minimum in a year) was rolled as troops. I have a few models sitting "in progress" on my desk so I may look to finish some of those off to keep on top of thing. Looking likely to be two Dark Eldar venoms that are 70% done.

2016 Hobby Painting Challenge

As per my previous post I have decided to try to motivate myself with my painting this year.

Both myself and Aaron are participating in the painting challenge.

The rules are simple. Each month (or on completion of the models assigned to each month) each participant rolls a d10 (or uses some d10 randomiser thingy) and assigns them self a force organisation slot to paint.

1HQ
2HQ
3Troops
4Troops
5Elites
6Elites
7Fast AttackHeavy Support
8Fast AttackHeavy Support
9Lord of WarHeavy Support
10Free Choice

The choice of models is up to each person and is not restricted to the same army. People like me tend to chop and change alot.

If painting a non 40K army then apply to roll to an appropriate choice from the army / system you decide to paint.

All the rolls etc are been tracking on a Google sheet.

However the January rolls are
